  • Endocrine system
    A network of glands throughout the body.
    Secretes hormones (chemical messengers) which travel through the bloodstream to the target cells.
  • Pituitary gland
    Controls release of hormones from other glands, known as the Master gland.

    Links the nervous system to the endocrine system in combination with pituitary. Maintains homeostasis of bodily systems.
    Hormone - CRH

    Regulates blood sugar levels, problems with this system leads to diabetes.
    Hormones - Insulin and Glucagon
  • Adrenal glands
    Plays an important role in the fight or flight process.
    Adrenal medulla - releases adrenaline and noradrenaline - helps the body to respond to stressful situations.
    Adrenal cortex - releases cortisol that regulates important bodily functions and increases glucose in blood stream.
  • Ovaries
    Secretes female sex hormones.Releases oestrogen and progesterone that are involved in the menstrual cycle.Oestrogen regulates growth and development.Progesterone helps prepare the body for pregnancy.
  • Testes
    Secretes male sex hormones. Releases testosterone that regulates libido, production of sperm and causes male characteristics to develop (e.g. voice deepening, facial hair).
  • Thyroid gland
    Regulates growth, metabolism and appetite.
    Hormone - Thyroxine
  • Parathyroids
    A small paired endocrine gland found in the thyroid gland.
    Helps regulate the level of calcium in the blood.
