Human Respiratory

Cards (13)

  • Respiration
Is the overall process by which the body gets rid of carbon dioxide.
  • Breathing
Is the mechanical phase of respiration which involves inhalation and expiration.
  • Epiglottis
A thin flap of tissue which covers the respiratory tract during deglutition.
  • Pleural Cavity
An empty space where the lungs is situated.
  • Diaphragm
A dome-shaped, muscular partition separating the thorax from the abdomen in mammals which plays a major role in breathing.
  • Functions of the Respiratory System
    • To facilitate the exchange of gases (O2 and CO2) between the atmosphere and blood.
    • Oxygen fueled cell organelles to create energy (ATP).
  • Functions of the Respiratory System
    • Breathing/Ventilation - Moving of air into and out of the lungs.
    • Respiration - The overall process which body gets oxygen and gets rid of carbon dioxide.
  • 3 Levels of the Process of Respiration
    • Cellular Respiration - Usage of oxygen to produce ATP and Carbon Dioxide as waste/by product.
    • Internal Respiration - Exchange of O2 and CO2 between the blood and cell.
    • External Respiration - Exchange of gasses between the lungs and the atmosphere (alveoli).
  • Humans breathe to ensure that oxygen enters the body and that carbon dioxide leaves the body.
  • Air enters through either the mouth or the nostrils.
  • The respiratory system is found in the thorax.
  • The respiratory is also known as breathing system.
  • Mechanism of Breathing
