  • hitler's start
    • in 1919 hitler joined the german workers party ( led by Drexler) this was a nationalist party
    • he was known as a skilled and passionate speaker and became leader in 1921 after it was rebranded at the nationalist socialist german workers party
  • nazi party ( 1920 formation)
    in feb the party pushed its agenda out through the 25 point programme , this had anti-semitic and was extremely patriotic but against non germans

  • SA ( 1921)

    Hitler formed the SA which was a group of political thugs and ex soldiers( freikorps) that had the aim to intimidate communists and rival opponents
  • munich putsch (1923 nov)

    hitler tried to hijack a meeting in a beer hall but failed due to information being leaked to police
    so when he entered the hall had police waiting for him and then led him to get a trial

    in court hitler expressed his views and nazi ideology , this proved in ideology spreading as media was present there and despite only serving 9 months in prison as opposed to his 5 year sentenced he wrote 'mein kampf' to showcase views

    in 1925 the nazi party ban was lifted and hitler had some work done
    set up the SS ( group of body guards that would protect hitler )
    bamberg conference 1926 - hitler shut down aspiring socialists and said they were bad and they should only follow him ( leader principal)

    • in 1928 2.6 % of votes and only got 12 seats in the reichstag and members exceeded 100,000
    • also set up hitler youth in 1926 and other societies for other professions to make them feel valued

    • 1930 had 18% of votes and had 300,000 members
    • july 1932 had 37% of votes -230 seats
    • nov 1932 had 33% of votes
  • wall street crash 1929
    the wall street crash had hit germany and now germany was reduced economically and had people looking at different party alternatives
    • with 1.6 mill unemployed this lead to starvation and industries collapsing
    • and the great depression
  • political unpopularity
    in 1930 new chancellor Bruning introduced harsh policies that caused living standards to fall so he was named ' hunger chancellor' - taxes increased , imported food pricing increased and unemployment insurance was cut back .
    • much of reichstag did not want to agree with these laws so president hindenburg had to use article 48
    • at one point he asked the president to suspend parliament and people said weimar no more felt like a democracy
  • political steps to hitler being chancellor
    • april 1932 - hitler vs hindenburg for president but hitler looses
    • may 1932 - bruning resigns as chancellor and von papen replaced him
    • july 1932 - hitler wings reichstag elections but hindenburg doesnt trust him to be chancellor
    • nov 1932 - hitler is still at majority but has lost a few seats
    • december 1932 - papen is replaced with schleichar and makes deal with hitler that hitler is chancellor and he is vice chancellor when he asks hindenburg
    • jan 1933 - hitler is chancellor
