Houses in the 16th century were single-room constructions with walls of bamboo and roofs of palm leaves, resting on four posts with access by bamboo ladders, with the ground floor used only for storage, and cooking and washing done in the batalan
There were no public buildings for religious or other purposes, but in times of worship, the people gathered in the house of the chief and constructed temporary shelters which were attached to the two sides of the chief's house
