Simon

Cards (6)

  • "You'll get back" --> Simon as a character appears knowledgeable, due to religious imagery adding further depth to his character
  • "Simon found for them the fruit they could not reach... passed them back down to the endless, outstretched hands" --> "endless" = hyperbolic language, emphasises the benevolent and empathetic nature of Simon. Despite the insurmountable demand, Simon is actively engaged in meeting the demand.
This determination is a clear displayal of his compassion through this willingness to help others.
  • "Simon found for them the fruit they could not reach... passed them back down to the endless, outstretched hands" AO3 --> representation of Jesus Christ: Simon is giving food to those who cannot feed themselves is reminiscent of the Biblical tale of the feeding of the 5,000. Like Jesus, Simon aims to help those less fortunate than himself
Unlike Jesus, Simon cannot inspire others to perform good deeds. Golding seems to be references the idea of divine grace, which is where the actions of God inspires other good acts. However, like Jesus, Simon is killed by his peers--> no change in behaviour
  • "He's queer, he's funny" (Ralph to Jack, about Simon)
Although Ralph has consistently said that Simon is the only boy that has helped him, he refers to him pejoratively behind his back --> Simon's alienation
This rejection of Simon, despite his focus on community and his altruism, reveals Golding's true feelings about human nature.
  • believes in acting altruistically, and is prescient (the first boy to realise there is no beast on the island --> "maybe it's only us"
  • "He moved through the forest in the last daylight, tracking the movements of the sun." --> interconnected with nature
