  • from 1928- end of 33 they had no seats in Reichstag and when Hitler came to power there was only 2 Nazi representatives

  • people feared communism; support grew during the depression
  • Nazi's had support of industrialists who were frightened by communism; Alfred Hugneburg made donations to the party
  • were very organised throughout 1920s and use propaganda to reinforce Nazi ideology and strength
  • had good technology= Hitler flew to rallies in plane in 1932 (not very common)
  • Goebbels minister of propoganda; spread Nazi message
  • Hitler shown as 'our last hope' for Germans
  • Von Papen failed as: ended ban on SA (led streets to violence), took over Prussian government and destroyed each state having leader. Hitler offered vice-chancellor but declined
  • Von Schliechler failures= wanted some Nazi's to join but Hitler blocked him, wanted support of SPD. industrialists only wanted Von Papen- Hitler coalition
  • the backstairs intrigue was a term used by Alan Bullock describing how Hitler came to power. Papen removed, Schleicher unable to get majority (Hitler's position strengthened), Papen told to talk to Hitler as Nazi's declining in votes, Hitler demanded position and Von-Papen became vice-chancellor to 'control him'
  • By Dec 1932 Nazi's almost bankrupt, economy in society beginning to recover, promise by Nazi's however could not be fulfilled. Von Papen and Hindenburg unable to establish government so had to form coalition with Hitler. Hindenburg had ultimate power.
