naming species

• the nomenclature used for classification is called the binomial system - all organisms are given one internationally accepted name in latin of 2 parts
• the first part of the name is genus and must have a capital letter, the second part is the species
• e.g. humans are Homo sapiens - genus is homo and species is sapiens
• the binomial system helps prevent confusion about the names of organisms
