NAIL STRUCTURE

• Nail body / plate - visible portion of the nail which is attached to the nail bed
• Nail root - it grows the matrix, a growing tissue
• Free edge - the tip of the nail that hang freely over the fingertip
• Nail bed - this is where the nail body rests
• Matrix - part of the nail bed which contains the nerves and blood vessels
• Lunula - half moon
• Nail wall - folds of the skin overlapping the sides of the nail
• Nail grooves - slits on the side of the nails Which moves as it grows
• Mantle - where the nail root is embedded
• Eponychium - the extension of the cuticle which partly covers the lunula
• Hyponychium - the part of the skin found under the free edge
• Perionychium - part of the cuticle surrounding the entire nail border
