• The Suez Canal was important for trade and when Colonel Nasser - a nationalist who staged a coup in Egypt - decided to nationalise the canal, Britain and France were outraged due to the impact it had on their trade
• Britain and France made an arrangement with Israel to invade the canal, but Eisenhower was outraged, causing a run on the pound
• Eden resigned and Macmillan took control
