The nervous system, central NS, peripheral NS, automatic NS, somatic NS, sympathetic NS and parasympathetic NS
What is the CNS?
It is made up of the brain and spinal cord and includes the sensory, relay and motor neurons
What is the peripheral nervous system?
Connects the CNS to the rest of the body
What is the automatic nervous system?
Involved in unconscious behavior such as digestion
What is the somatic nervous system?
Involved in conscious behavior
What is the sympathetic nervous system?
Involved in the fight or flight
What is the parasympathetic nervous system?
involved in the rest and digest process
What does the sensory neuron do?
Transmits electrical impulses from receptors to the CNS
What does the relay neuron do?
Transmits electrical impulses between the sensory neuron and the motor neuron
What does the motor neuron do?
Transmits electrical impulses from the CNS to effectors
Explain how the synaptic transmission occurs.
The presynaptic neuron containssynapticvesicles in the neurotransmitters which sends electricalimpulses to the end of the neuron. When this happens the neuronreleasesneurotransmitters through the synapticcleft via diffusion to the postsynaptic neuron. These bind to receptors which triggers an electricimpulses which in turn causes a muscle contraction or hormonal releases
What are excitatory neurotransmitters?
Neurotransmitters that increase the likelihood of an actionpotential in the postsynaptic neuron
What are inhibitory neurotransmitters?
Neurotransmitters that decrease the likelihood of actionpotential in the postsynaptic neuron
