• Waves are disturbances that transfer energy from one place to another without transferring matter
• Vibration is a rapid back and forth motion of particles or objects
• In sound waves, particles move back and forth in the direction of the wave propagation
• Sound waves do not travel in a vaccum
• Sound waves require a medium (such as air, water, or solids) to carry the vibration. In a vaccum there is no particles to vibrate
• The features of waveform include:

  1. Aplitude
  2. Wavelength
  3. Frequency
  4. Period
  5. Phase
• Wavelength is the distance between successive crests or troughs in a wave
• Amplitude is the height of the wave crest or depth of the wave through from the rest position
• Loudness of sound is a preception of the energy or intensity of a sound wave
• Decibels is a unit of measurment for the intensity or loudness of sound
• Sound energy is the energy carried by sound waves
• The perceived frequency of a sound; how high or low a sound is called pitch
• Frequency is the number of waves that pass a point in one second
• Hertz is the unit of frequency, equal to one cycle per second
• Compression: The region in a sound wave where particles are closest together
• Rarefaction: The region in a sound wave where particles are furthest apart
