optic fibres

  • Intro
    • Fiber optics allow rapid communication and transmission of vast amounts of information
    • this technology depends on the total internal reflection of light rays travelling through glass fibres.
    • An optical fibre is a thin rod of high-quality glass. Light/infrared getting in at one end undergoes repeated total internal reflection and emerges at the other end.

The glass that makes up the fibre is more optically dense (high refractive index) than the cladding (low refractive index). The material that makes up the cladding is deliberately chosen to maximise total internal reflection.
    • optical fibres work even when the fibre is bent
    • A fibre optic cable consists of large numbers of individual glass optic fibres bundled together
