Acids / Alkalis

Cards (12)

  • Acids and Alkalis are both acids but have different properties
    • Corrosive Substance materials that can attack and destroy, by chemical action, living tissue, organic compounds and metal.
  • Acids and Alkalis can be diluted by adding water which makes them less corrosive but still dangerous - this is called an irritant
  • Indicators - substances that change colour when they are added to acidic or alkaline solutions.
  • Most cleaning products are made from Alkalis
  • Neutral solutions - substances that are neither acidic nor alkaline
  • PH scale - a way of measuring how acidic or alkaline something is : neutral - 7 - green alkaline - 14 - purple acidic - 1 - red
  • Neutralization - when acid and alkaline mix together to balance each other out
  • Word equation : A chemical reaction that is showed used reactants and products
  • Word equation for the reaction of acidic and alkaline : Acid+Alkali= Salt+Water
  • An alkali can be described as a soluble base. A base is any substance, soluble or insoluble, which can neutralize an acid which forms salt + water. e.g. acid + soluble base = salt + water
  • An antacid is a substance which neutralizes stomach acidity
