Combustion

• Fuel - chemical substance from which stored energy can be transferred
• Fossil fuels - a fuel formed from the dead remains of organisms (coal, oil, natural gas)
• Hydrcarbon - contains molecules containing only carbon and hydrogen
• Test for carbon dioxide is limewater turns cloudy
• Burning fossil fuels releases large amounts of CO2 into atmosphere
• Oxidation - reacting with oxygen
• Metal + oxygen = metal oxide
• To put out a fire, you remove one thing from the fire triangle

• Pollutants - harm or damage the enviroment
• Catalyst - A substance that increases the rate of a chemical reaction
• Greenhouse gases - gases in the earth's atmosphere that trap heat, including: water vapour (H2O)carbon dioxide (CO2)nitrous oxide(N2O)methane (CH4)
• Global warming - An increase in average temperature on Earth due to increased levels of greenhouse gases
• The greenhouse effect is the process through which heat is trapped near Earth's surface by substances known as 'greenhouse gases.'
