Cards (4)

  • Chemicals + apparatus needed: conical flask, glass trough, graduated cylinder, tubing, magnesium, 0.5M, 1.0M and 1.5M hydrochloric acid and water
    1. Add magnesium ribbon to dilute HCl and put a stopper on the flask. Start the stopwatch.
    2. Record the volume of hydrogen produced in the graduated cylinder every 30 seconds until the reaction stops.
    3. Repeat the experiment with different HCl concentrations.
  • Chemical formula:
    Mg + 2HCl -> MgCl2 + H2
  • Word formula:
    Magnesium + hydrochloric acid -> magnesium chloride + hydrogen
  • The hydrogen can be tested for by holding a lit flame at the hydrogen. It will make a 'pop' sound.
