  • Procedures 1
    • The participants were invited to the laboratory to take part in what they thought was a memory experiment.
    • Met by a confederate experimenter (white lab coat) + a confederate PPS, (Mr Wallace)
    • Told they would be randomly allocated as a teacher or learner - rigged as he naïve participant was always assigned to the teacher role and the accomplice was always assigned the learner role
  • Procedures 2
    Both teacher and learner were then taken to the experimental room where the learner was strapped into an ‘electric chair’ apparatus to prevent excessive movement. An electrode was placed in the learner’s wrist, linked to a shock generator in the adjoining room.
  • Procedures 3
    A word activity was read out + teacher had to give a shock each time learner was incorrect - each mistake means next time higher shock given.Instructions Milgram gave to Mr Wallace – he was told to give approximately three wrong answers to every correct one. Mr Wallace was also told to make set responses
    • Volt 75 = grunt
    • Volt 120 = Shouts in pain
    • Volt 150 = say he refuses to continue with the experiment
    • Volt 200 = Blood curling screams
    • Volt 300 = Refuses to answer, mumbles something about a heart condition
    • Volt +330 = silence
