Bio practice exam questions

Cards (2)

  • Using examples, explain the importance of cell differentiation in the function of an organism-
A multicellular organism needs to have differentiated cells to be more efficient. Differentiated cells are cells that have become specialised to perform a specific function, for example, red blood cells are round + lack a nucleus so that they can carry oxygen. another example would be a stem cell turning into neurons.
  • Identify two examples of gas exchange structures and explain how the features of these structures facilitate their function -
Gills is a gas exchange structure present in fish. Lungs are gas exchange structures present in humans, that contain small air sacs called alveoli. The large surface area of the structures maximises the diffusion of oxygen into and carbon dioxide from the cells in the body and to receive oxygen from the environment. The surface of the structures is moist, as gases must dissolve in water to diffuse across the respiratory surface.
