  • Force multiplier
    • Increase the application of force by making the force arm longer than the resistance arm
  • Speed multiplier
    • Maximising lever length at the point of impact/release ensures maximum velocity is achieved
    • Increase movement speed by making the resistance arm longer than the force arm
  • First class lever (RAF)
    • The axis is located in the middle, with the force and resistance on either side
    • E.g. heading a soccer ball
  • Second class lever (FRA)
    • The axis is located at the end, with the resistance in the middle and force applied at the end
    • E.g. standing up on your tippy toes, doing calf raises
  • Third class lever (RFA)
    • The axis is located at one end, with the applications of force in the middle and resistance applied at the opposite end
    • E.g. golfer using longest club, side arm ball throw, lacrosse or ice hockey
