  • OPCD (Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder) is characterized by extreme perfectionism, order, control, and neatness.
  • Mental Disorder - conditions that affect the way an individual thinks, feels, and behaves
  • The exact causes of these disorders are still unknown, but here are some contributing factors that increase the risk of these disorders:
    Heredity or family history
    Traumatic experiences such as stressful events or childhood abuse
    • Chemical imbalances in the brain
    • Exposure to toxic chemicals or viruses of a pregnant mother
    Substance abuse (drugs, alcohol, etc.)
    Traumatic head injury or brain infection
  • Anxiety disorders - involve more than temporary worry or fear. For a person with anxiety disorder, the anxiety does not go away and can get worse over time.
  • Mood Disorders – are changes or abnormalities in the mood that interfere with a person’s ability to live their everyday life.
  • Eating Disorders - are behavioral conditions characterized by severe and persistent disturbance in eating behaviors and associated distressing thoughts and emotions.
  • Personality Disorder – are a group of mental illnesses. They involve long-term patterns of thoughts and behaviors that are unhealthy and inflexible. The behaviors cause serious problems with relationships and work.
  • Schizophrenia – is a chronic, severe mental disorder that affects the way a person thinks, acts, expresses emotions, perceives reality, and relates to others. They might feel frightened and withdrawn and could appear to have lost touch with reality. This lifelong disease can’t be cured but can be controlled with proper treatment.
  • Red Flags to look out for:
    • trouble sleeping
    • having racing thoughts
    • changes in appetite 
    • Isolation
    short temper
  • Anxiety - natural response to stress, and it can be helpful in certain
    circumstances. It can alert us of impending dangers and
    assist us in preparing and paying attention.
  • Anxiety disorders - differentiated from normal feelings of nervousness or
    anxiety by the appearance of intense fear or anxiety
  • Anxiety vs Fear:
    Anxiety - Apprehension about a future
    Fear - Response to an immediate threat
  • Fear triggers Fight or Flight Response
  • Anxiety increases preparedness
  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) – Long-lasting anxiety not specific to a situation or object.
  • Panic Disorder/Panic Attack – Quick hit of terror often followed by trembling and difficulty breathing.
  • Social Anxiety Disorder/Social Phobia – Intense fear in and of social interactions managed with avoidance.
  • Specific Phobias – Fear of a specific situation or object.
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) – Anxiety from traumatic experiences.
  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) – Repetitious
    obsessions and compulsions.

  • Bipolar Disorder - extreme mood swings and fluctuating changes in a
    person’s energy, thinking, behavior and sleeping pattern.
  • Bipolar I – it is the most severe form in which mania and depression last up to 2 weeks or more.
  • Cyclothymia - milder form of bipolar disorder
  • Post-partum Depression – a type of depression occurring during pregnancy or after delivery.
  • Depressive Disorder - is a common mental disorder to which the depression continues for no apparent reason or even when stressful events are over.
  • Dysthymia – the chronic type of depression which can last up to 2 years.
  • Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) – Patterns of depression are affected by the change of season particularly during fall and winter.
  • Psychotic Depression – A type of severe depression accompanied by visual or auditory hallucinations and delusions.
  • Schizophrenia is a mental disorder that causes a person to develop psychosis.
  • Psychosis means “to escape from reality,” and that’s exactly what schizophrenia does
  • While the exact causes of schizophrenia are not fully known, it seems to result from a mix of genetic component and environmental factors.
