St. Paul travelled around the Mediterranean, trying to persuade those who didn't know about Jesus to join Christianity
for many e.g. Evangelical Protestants, this remains the main task the Church should undertake
three groups who undertake mission as evangelism:
Church Missionary Society (CMS)
The Evangelical Alliance Mission (TEAM)
Alpha Course
Church Missionary Society:
engaged in mission around the world, setting up churches as well as offering health + social care in the 19th century
has become less concerned with converting foreigners + more with supporting the work of local churches by helping them to run outreach projects
1980s: CMS missionaries worked alongside the clergy of Cairo Anglican cathedral to run child-care projects
The Evangelical Alliance Mission:
missionaries who are qualified specialists work in teams to set up + staff churches, hospitals + schools in countries where Christianity is not the local religion
openly share their evangelical beliefs + encourage locals to attend their Church services to learn about Christianity
Alpha Course:
originally aimed at members of the church
as it developed, people were encouraged to invite friends to the church
development of evangelism:
originally aimed at converting people in other countries to Christianity
