Cards (4)

  • Why may offenders fail to rehabilitate?
    1. short sentences (not enough time)
    2. inadequate resources for education and training (In 2020, half of the prisons didn't have enough useful programmes. Whilst less than 2/5 had "good" or "reasonably good" ones)
    3. 15% cut in prison officers (less recreational/ educational activities)
    4. Very few temporary licence schemes (less training/ education/ experience)
  • Why do prisoners released into the community unlikely to rehabilitate?
    1. Lack of money (granted £46 on release)
    2. Lack of a job (1/4 prisoners have a job on release)
    3. Homelessness (NACRO found that 1/9 no settled accommodation, so cannot meet licence requirments)
  • Whats the end Friday releases campaign?
1/3 all prisoners are released on a Friday and this leads to a race to access vital services before they close for the weekend. So, they may be forced to sleep rough on the streets until Monday and are vulnerable to recidivism. Therefore, End Friday Releases want to end this to give ex offenders a better chance of rehabillitation.
  • Why do a minority reoffend after community sentences?
    1. inadequate support for complex needs (drug addiction/ mental health)
    2. Inadequate supervision by probation services
    3. Failure of CRCs (privatised probation services)
