using hormones to treat infertility

Cards (10)

  • how does the process of IVF work?
1, fertility drugs are used to make lots of eggs mature at the same time for collection
2, the eggs are collected and placed in a special solution in a petri dish
3, a sample of semen is collected and the sperm and eggs are mixed in the petri dish
4, the eggs are checked to make sure they have been fertilised and that early embryos are developing properly
5, once fertilised eggs have formed tiny balls of cells, 1 or 2 of the embryos are placed in the womb of the mother and if it is successful then at least 1 baby will grow and develop
  • what are 5 causes of infertility?
Blocked fallopian tubes, blocked sperm ducts, not enough sperm produced in the testes, a lack of mature eggs produced in the ovaries or a failure of the ovaries to release an egg
  • how can some causes of infertility be treated?
Using hormones, it is called fertility treatment
  • how does FSH work as an artificial fertility drug?
When the woman takes this drug it stimulates eggs to mature in her ovaries, and also triggers oestrogen production which significantly increases her chances of getting pregnant due to the increased likelihood of one or more eggs being released
  • why may IVF be used?
If the use of hormones alone is not successful, but FSH and LH are given to the mother to ensure that as many eggs as possible mature in her ovaries ready to be harvested
  • what happens due to an IVF procedure not being reliable?
It can result in no pregnancy, or in multiple births (1 in 5 successful IVF treatments result in multiple babies)and both of these outcomes can be distressing for those undergoing treatment
  • What are the IVF success rates in women in 2010?
    under 35 = 32.2%
    35-37 = 27.7%
    38-39 = 20.8%
    40-42 = 13.6%
    43-44 = 5%
    over 44 = 1.9%
  • what are 3 considerations surrounding the use of IVF as an infertility treatment?
1, it is not a natural process
2, it allows parents to conceive who would otherwise not be able to have a baby
3, it enables older parents to have children
  • what are another 3 considerations surrounding the use of IVF as an infertility treatment?
1, many IVF treatments result in multiple births which can be dangerous for the mother and unborn babies
2, IVF treatment is very expensive and there is only limited availability through the NHS
3, it allows younger women to focus on their careers and choose to have a baby later in life
  • state one cause of infertility in males and one in females?
    Males- blocked sperm ducts
females- failure of the ovaries to release an egg
