AO3 - Gender Bias

Cards (3)

  • To evaluate, it is important to note that androcentric research does not always mean gender bias. For example, both Milgram’s research used male only sample. However, this was relevant to his aim of understanding Nazi soldiers’ behaviour who would have been male. This recognition is important in scrutinising whether there is gender bias within research. Furthermore, it may be unrealistic to look at research through completely objective eyes. However, researchers should take steps to consider possible gender bias within their research and potential consequences of these.
  • Many argue that gender bias is emphasised by the research process. Psychology is dominated by males, researching male issues, using lab experiments and standardised conditions, assuming that men and women receive equal treatment by the research and respond the same to the researcher and experimental situation. This could create differences that do not exist or mask real ones. Therefore, it is argued that more female psychologists should use research methods like qualitative interviews to enable females more equality which will ultimately lead to a more valid understanding of female behaviour.
  • Furthermore, it is argued that alpha bias in psychological research provides scientific justification for gender stereotypes. Evolutionary psychologists suggest that there are innate differences between males and females, with females being dependent on males to provide resources. Feminist psychologists argue this can be used against women to maintain male power, for example such as denying women opportunities within employment (e.g. promotions). Therefore, alpha bias may impact females’ life prospects and furthermore may negatively impact the economy due to lack of women in the workforce.
