    A process of international cooperation among nation states, aimed at negotiating responses to problems that affect more than one state
  • Challenges to sovereignty/ territorial integrity which lead to conflict
    • Citizens are treated unjustly or groups of citizens have limited representation in government
    • There is competition for the same, or scarce, resources such as water supply, agricultural land or oil
    • People seek autonomy, independence and self-determination if suppressed/ marginalised by a state government
  • The UN's role in regulating conflict
    The UN contributes to international security through the UN Security Council - a political and legal authority
    • They carry out preventative diplomacy and mediation, meaning they prevent conflict from arising
    • The UN also contribute to international security through currently having in place 16 peace keeping missions
    • These are backed by the legal and political authority of the UN Security Council
  • The EU's role in regulating conflict
    The EU contribute to international security through its important security role which provides forces from member states on an ad hoc basis
  • Global commons
    Areas or resources that are outside of political reach of any one nation state
    Eg. atmosphere, Antarctica, outer space, international waters
