HOUSING AND EDUCATION

  • The New Towns Act (1946) aimed to construct 12 new towns to reduce overcrowding. A large housebuilding programme was carried out with the intention of providing millions of people with high-quality homes, but they failed to meet its targets (750,000 fewer houses than required) primarily due to economic constraints.
  • However, million+ new homes were built between 1945 and 1951 which ensured that decent, affordable housing was available to many low-income familie for the first time ever. The 1951 census revealed that there was approximately the same level of homelessness as in 1931. The Education Act (1947) saw local authorities providing education up until 15 with meals, milk, and medical services available at every school.
