    In Mumbai the squatter settlement of Dharavi is now home to over 1 million people. Dharavi lies between two railway lines and is one of the biggest squatter settlements in the world. The squatter settlement is unplanned
  • Characteristics
    • overcrowded and noisy
    • houses are made from cardboard, wood, corrugated iron, plastic sheeting and metal from oil drums
    • lack of sanitation, clean drinking water and open sewers
    • pollution and disease are common
    • thousands of workshops and people employed in the informal job sector
  • The authorities want to improve the Dharavi slum because
    Land is estimated to be worth $10 billion
    Near CBD which makes it a good location
    Flat higher ground making it easier to build on
    It's got nearby transport links to the nearby airport and railway
  • Vision Mumbai - projects aims to improve the city by targeting slum areas
    The aim is to:
     
    • Reduce slum populations by 10-12%
     
    • Build 1.1 million low cost homes
     
     
    • Improve general safety, education, healthcare, air quality and water sanitation across the city
     
     
     
    The council have been demolishing slum areas and replacing them with better quality tower blocks to improve the quality of life and reduce poverty for local residents
  • The Dharavi redevelopment has many positive impacts;
     
     
    1. Clean water piped to every home
     
    1. Sewage pipes which take away waste to reduce spread of diseases
     
    1. Organised wide roads to allow the delivery of organised waste management services
     
    1. Tower blocks are built away from industrial areas to keep residents away from pollution and hazards material - making it safer for the citizens there
     
    1.  Homes will have addresses so residents will be registered by city authorities which will allow them to collect more taxes and will give more opportunities for the people to enter formal employment
  • Negative impacts of development
    1. Accommodation is very small and causes cramped conditions
     
    1. People will have to commute to work as a result of the tower block being further away from industrial areas
     
    1. The slum had a key sense of community which seems to be lost in these new high rise homes
     
    1. Residents will have to pay taxes which affects the poor's income
     
     
    1. Jobs will be lost sorting rubbish due to waste management services
