Cardiovascular System

Cards (27)

  • Heart - pumps blood in the body, surrounded by the pericardium, and divided into 4 chambers by the septa
  • The upper chambers of the heart receives blood (right and left Atrium)
  • The lower chambers of the heart pumps (right and left ventricle)
  • Right Atrium - receives deoxy. blood, pumps blood to right ventricle
  • Right ventricle - receives deoxy. blood from the right atrium, pumps blood to the lungs
  • Left atrium - receives oxy. blood from the lungs and pumps it to the left ventricle
  • left ventricle - receives oxy. blood from the lungs and pumps it to the body
  • Arteries - blood vessel that carries blood away from the heart
  • Aorta - an artery that carries oxy. blood from the heart to the body
  • Pulmonary artery - carries oxygenated blood to the heart
  • veins - blood vessel that carries blood back to the heart, generally parallel to the arteries
  • superior vena cava - veins that carry deoxy. blood FROM the upper body
  • inferior vena cava - carries deoxygenated blood from the lower body
  • pulmonary vein - carries oxy. blood from the lungs to the heart
  • Capillaries - connects arteries and veins, essential for gas nutrient exchange in the blood
  • Heart Valves - ensures one-way of blood
  • Pulmonary Valve - right ventricle to pulmonary artery
  • Tricuspid valve - right atrium to right ventricle
  • Aortic valve - left ventricle to aorta
  • Mitral valve - lungs to left atrium
  • Red Blood Cells - erythrocytes, picks up oxygen from lungs and transport it to the body's tissues
  • White Blood Cells - leukocytes, protects the body from harmful invasion and body cells
  • Platelets - thrombocytes, repairs damaged blood vessels, provides growth factors for healing and repair by forming clots to help stop bleeding
  • Plasma - liquid component of blood; delivers hormones, nutrients, and proteins; help exchange oxygen and Carbon Dioxide
  • Cardiac cycle begins with Systole (contraction of heart muscle, pumping blood) and ends with diastole (relaxation of heart muscle, filling with blood)
  • Sphygmomanometer - instrument to measure blood pressure
  • Normal BP is 120/80 mmHg
