    Both Fitzgerald and Steinbeck argue the idea of individualism as men are supposed to compete not work together and the nostalgia of the frontier. Fitzgerald romanticises the views of the past and is critical of how men are unable to achieve the traditional ideal of a man anymore. Steinbeck argues that the previous masculinity has led to what masculinity is like today as men have no purpose.

    masculity is defined by wealth, status, material possessions and dominance. Gatsby confirms the notations of masculinity must be showed off to determine your level of masculity. Men have become a lot more individualistic.

    the men are experience a crisis of masculity due to the dust bowl and the great depression and they have lost their jobs in farming so they can no longer provide foe their families so have to migrate in hope to find work. Masculinity is defined as being the breadwinner and having a job.
