    1. Mechanical damage causes mast cells to activate which releases histamine and heparin.
  • 2. Histamine increase blood flow due to vasodilation which causes heat and redness in an area.
  • 3. Heparin prevents clotting which slows the spread of a pathogen into healthy tissues.
  • 4. Mast cells attract phagocytes which consume micro-organisms and cell debris.
  • 5. Pain receptors are stimulated so a person can feel pain.
  • 6. Phagocytes, filled with bacteria, debris and dead cells begin to die and form pus.
  • 7. New cells are produced by mitosis, and repair of the damaged tissue takes place.
