  • how can a NGB help ensure the development of elite performers?
    • Initially it can promote and increase participation in its sport –> providing equal opportunities for all
    • It can also use regional scouts and talent identification schemes to try to identify young sporting talent – once talent has been identified it needs to be supported in a number of ways (e.g., via provision of Performance Lifestyle support, structured level of competition and development squads to progress through)
  • NGBS - coaching and how it increases performance
They work with organisations such as the national institutes of sport & UK sport to provide elite performers with various support services necessary to help them develop and progress. E.g., high quality coaches and top class training facilities are important in enabling performers to develop their talents to the full.
NGBs provide sport specific coaching awards from basic low level qualifications through to the high levels necessary to support and develop elite performers.
  • NGBs and funding
NGBs are the organisations which make the decisions on who in their sport should receive funding e.g., from UK Sports World Class programme.
  • NGBs whole sports plans
A whole sports plan is a lottery funded, Sport England approved outline of how an NGB intends to increase participation in the sport it is responsible for as well as identify and develop talent in it.
In 2012 NGBs submitted their whole sport plans to Sport England, giving information on how investment in their sports would nurture young talent.
For the 4 year plan that the whole sport plan is in operation, for example 2013-2017, a sum of  £83 million was allocated to develop talented young athletes.
  • Rowability - whole sports plan
British rowing is one example of an NGB that developed a 2013-2017 whole sport plan and it received over £5 million for participation schemes such as Rowability and Indoor Rowing
