Nervous System

Cards (11)

  • 2 parts of the nervous system
    Central Nervous System (CNS)
    Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
  • Central Nervous System

    Brain + Spinal Cord

    Controls body from PNS order
  • Peripheral Nervous System
    Somatic + Autonomic Nervous System

All nerves communicate to the CNS from sensory neurons
  • Somatic nervous system
    Concsiously aware actions

Sensory (afferent) + Motor (efferent) neurons = Skeletal muscles
  • Autonomic nervous system

Sympathetic = readies body for threat
e.g. Increases in heart rate, dilation of pupils

Parasympathetic = day to day activities
    e.g. Homeostasis, heart rate

    Actions based atomatically
  • Hypothalamus
Located below Thamlmus + above pituritary gland

Maintains Homeostatasis by relasing hormones + controls hunger, thirst, sleep

    Apart of the CNS
  • Thalamus
    Above Hypohtalmus and brainstem

Relay station for motor and sensory (except smell)signals to cerbral cortex

    Crucial for sleep + consciousness

    Apart of the CNS
  • Medulla
Lower part of brainstem, above spinal cord, below pons
    Autonomic functions: heartbeat, breathing, vomitting
    Part of CNS
  • Pons
    Middle Part of Brainstem
Relays signals between Cerebellum + Cerebrum = sleep, breathing, facial expressions
  • Brainstem
    Contains: Midbrain, Medulla, Pons,
Signal between brain + spinal cord.
  • Motor Neurons

    Carries Impulses towards muscles
