  • uk sports world class performance programme
It can take athletes many years to develop the high level skills & competitive maturity required to be successful at the top level of international sport -> UK Sport has adopted a funding philosophy which reflects potentially long journeys to the top – investing around £100 million annually into elite sport.
Funding philosophy = ‘no compromise’ and bases its decisions on performances at major sporting competitions
  • uk sport and no compromise funding approach
UK Sport has adopted this approach to raise standards among team GB athletes. Designed to make better use of the funding available to elite sport by funding athletes/sport deemed to have the best chance of success (directed at potential medal winners). Large approach -> increased Team GBs medal chances & helps justify the large national lottery investment in elite sport.

In the lead up to Rio, UK athletics funded 21 podium group athletes including Jessica Ennis-Hill and Mo farah
  • world class pathway - podium potential
designed to support athletes whose performances suggest they have realistic medal winning capabilities at subsequent Olympic/Paralympic games (max 8 yrs away from podium)
  • below podium potential is talent level

Beneath podium potential is talent level which provides funding and support to identify and confirm athletes who have the potential to progress to the World Class Pathway. The futures programme in place for British Athletics underpins the WCPP and was designed to provide financial and medical support to young, talented athletes (17-20 yrs) and their coaches.
