Weathering and erosion🌧️🪨

• Weathering is the breaking down of soil and rocks
• Erosion is when weathered material is moved by wind, water or ice
• Freeze thaw action

  1 in the mountainous areas there are small potholes filled with water as temperatures fluctuate the water turns to ice

  2 the ice expands and due to the pressure small pieces of rock break off.

  3 as this process occurs multiple times the rock weakens and falls off and scree is the rock that is the weakened
• Carbonation

  1 as rainwater falls it disolves carbon dioxide

  2 the carbon dioxide mixes with the rainwater and forms a weak carbonic acid

  3 limestone contains calcium carbonate which when mixed with the weak carbonic acid a chemical reaction occurs

  4 the calcium carbonate begins to dissolve. this process is known as carbonation

  5 limestone is a permeable rock it creates verticals joints and Horizontal bedding planes
• The Burren is a karst landscape of limetone
• A swallow hole is formed from the collapse of the roof of an underground cave system
