Function of DNA

Cards (5)

  • DNA is the hereditary material responsible for passing genetic information between cells. It has a very stable structure which is able to pass between generations without significant change. Also, most mutations are repaired, so persistent mutations are rare.
  • DNA consists of two separate strands which are only joined by hydrogen bonds, allowing them to separate during DNA replication and protein synthesis.
  • DNA is an extremely large molecule, therefore it carries an immense amount of genetic information.
  • The DNA base pairs are contained within the helical cylinder of the deoxyribose-phosphate backbone, protecting the genetic information from external physical and chemical damage.
  • Base pairing allows DNA to be easily replicated and transfer information as mRNA.
