alcohols

Cards (3)

  • alcohol: an organic compound that contains a hydroxil functional group (-OH)
    • Are polar -> have higher melting and boiling points and are very soluble in water
    • the longer hydrocarbon chain they are attatched to, the less polar they become. Short alcohols are very polar in water
    1. longest LCC that includes OH. OH is given the lowest number
    2. drop the 'e' and add 'ol'
    3. for 2 'OH' groups retain the 'e' and add 'diol' (ex. ethane-1,1-diol)
    4. for 3 'OH' groups retain the 'e' and add 'triol'
  • for methanol and ethanol, there is only one option for OH location so no #
