• Disease spread quickly as many people lived closely together
• The water was contaminated as there was human waste in the water and nearby there was also cesspits which also contaminated the water.
• Towns smelled very bad due to the dirt which led to the idea that miasma led to disease.
• Butchers slaughtered animals in the streets and left the waste in the streets
