• The devastating attack on the defenceless town of Guernica horrified people across the world and came to symbolise the remorseless cruelty of fascist military tactics
• Several squadrons of Italian and German aircraft, including the new Heinkel 111 bombers, targeted Guernica with 60,000 lb of explosives and bombs. 3 days after the bombings, the Nationalists took Guernica
• The Basque government reported a civilian death toll of 1,685 and the horrors were widely exploited in Republican propaganda
