  • Read et al. argues that diathesis includes a range of factors such as psychological trauma. It has been proposed that early psychological trauma alters an infant's developing brain, increasing vulnerability.
  • Gottesman reviewed cases of schizophrenia in twins and found identical twins are more likely to develop schizophrenia than non identical twins, indicating that there must be other factors, environmental factors that may cause the onset of schizophrenia
  • Murray reported children born after flu epidemics where mother contracted disease when pregnant had an 88% increased chance of developing schizo than those born in same time period whose mothers had not contracted flu. Flu is suspected of causing defects in neural development leading to increased vulnerability to schizo due to brain damage, which has a knock-on effect on dopamine functioning
  • A combination of treatments given simultaneously is more effective than one treatment in isolation. effectiveness of treatments depends on relapse rate, cost, side effects etc.
  • Combining treatments may be cost effective, SZ often has a biological basis, and psychological components, so a combination treatment is desirable.
  • Combination CBT treatments can have a downside– patients receiving CBT sometimes interpret the side effects of simultaneous drug treatments in a delusional manner, increasing their mistrust and resistance to further treatment.
