    fish are taken from their natural habitat and to aquariums. many species are in decline because of this, which could lead to extinction someday
  • coastal development?

    buildings on areas near reefs create lots of noise and waste pollution, this damages the reef and disturbs wildlife
  • coral bleaching?

    sea temperature increases (climate change) and a higher level of acid in the water, it forces polyps out of the coral, leaving coral skeletons behind
  • tourists?

    divers break off chunks of coral to take home, and the boat anchors damage the reef
  • crown of thorns starfish?
    this species of starfish eat coral and increase in numbers and thrive when water is polluted. some reefs have been completely eaten by these animals!
