SPIRITUAL SELF

• Spiritual self - "is the most enduring and intimate part of the self"-William James
• Spiritual self - inner most working of the persons mind, behavior, beliefs and even morals
• Spiritual Self: Persons will, intelligence and abilities, morals, and values
• Person's will - refers to one's wishes; things a person want to see and achieve in their lives
• intelligence and abilities - strength of a person; things they have confidence in doing
• morals - what is right or wrong
• values - ability to distinguish what is important or not
• religion - beliefs and behaviors related to supernatural beings and power
• worldview - collective ideas that members of a culture share concerning the ultimate shape and substance of their reality
• omniscience- all knowing
• omnipotence - unlimited power
• omnipresence - present anywhere
• religion - organized set of ideas, along with beliefs and ceremonial practices
• spirituality - more often individual and does not require a format or organization
• theism - belief in god(s)
• Myth - narrative that explains the fundamentals of human existence
• rituals - symbolic act to guide members in an orderly way through personal and collective transitions
• Functions of religion - cognitive, emotional and social
• psychological - man's key motivation is the search for meaning
• philosophical - life has unconditional meaning
• anthropological - man is ultimately self-determining
