Vesalius (1514-1564)

• Born in belgium
• Went to university in paris
• Became a professor of surgery at the university of Padua in italy
• Vesalius proved Galen wrong - he proved how human anatomy is different to pigs
• Dissected animals to prove where Galen gained his knowledge, and explained where he was wrong
• Wrote Fabric of the Human Body in 1543
• Published books with the printing press, and his illustrations were included in many popular books about anatomy, causing the knowledge to be more widespread than before
• His ideas weren’t accepted at first, because they challenged galen
• Doctors ignored his ideas at first and continued using the old methods
• Faced heavy criticism for challenging Galen and had to leave his job at Padua
• Ideas have doctors a more reliable basis to treat people on, and his ideas are still accepted today
