• Edward Jenner was a country doctor who trained in London with John hunter
• Discovered vaccination with cowpox prevented smallpox in 1796
• Attended a medical society where someone spoke of the issue of smallpox in 1768
• Published another paper in 1798, and this time he was given £30,000 to develop his work
• He gave cowpox from a milkmaid to a boy called James Phipps, and waited for him to recover, then gave him smallpox from a smallpox victim. he didn’t get sick
