  • Variation - the differences between members of the same species
    Mutation - a change in the genetic code of the DNA
    Biodiversity - refers to all the different species of living things on Earth
    Evolution - the gradual change in inherited characteristics that occur in species over many generations
    Adaptation - changes occurring to a species to make them better suited to their environment
    Natural selection - when organisms with the most favourable traits in an environment survive to breed and pass those traits onto their offspring
    Extinction - when there are no living members of a species
  • Example of Evolution - The Horse:
    Over a period of 40 million years, horses have;
    • Grew taller - from 60cm millions of years ago to 160cm today
    • Changed from three toes to two toes, eventually to a single hoof
    The hoof change was important as the horses grew overtime, the three toes could not support the horse so it adapted to change to a hoof which can support the weight of the new horse
