    Symptoms include bad breath (halitosis), loose teeth, unpleasant taste, gum abscesses
  • Causes of gum disease
    • Antibiotic treatment
    • Steroid inhaler use (forgetting to rinse the mouth after use)
    • Cancer treatment (chemotherapy)
    • Poor mouth hygiene
    • Wearing dentures that do not fit properly
    • Smoking
  • ANUG - Acute necrotising ulcerative gingivitis presentation of these symptoms with symptoms of gingivitis should be referred to a dentist
  • REFER Symptoms of gum disease
    • Bleeding & painful gums
    • Painful ulcers
    • Receding gums in between the teeth
    • Bad breath (halitosis)
    • Metallic taste in the mouth
    • Excess saliva in the mouth
    • High temperature (fever)
  • Treatment for gum disease
    1. Good Oral Hygiene
    2. Brush teeth twice a day for 2-3 minutes (electronic toothbrush ideally)
    3. Use toothpaste containing fluoride (helps prevent tooth decay)
    4. Flossing the teeth regularly
    5. Not smoking
    6. Regular visiting dentist (once to twice a year)
    7. Chlorhexidine Mouthwash/ Dental gel/ Spray. (Corsodyl)
    8. Hydrogen peroxide Mouthwash
    9. Hexetidine oral rinse (Oraldene)

  • Gingivitis treatment course - minimum one month
  • Rinse mouth thoroughly after using toothpaste if using chlorhexidine product after it, as chlorhexidine can affect certain toothpastes
