REQUIRED PRACTICAL 3: EFFECTS OF OSMOSIS ON PLANT TISSUE

Cards (4)

    1. Peel the potato
    2. Cork borer to produce 3 cylinders of potato, corks borer makes sure they all have same diameter
    3. Use scapal to trip cylinders to same length, around 3cm
    4. Measure length and mass of each cylinder
    5. Place cylinders in test tube, add 10cm cubed of 0.5 molar solution to first test tube
    6. Add 10cm cubed of 0.25 molar solution to second test tube and 10cm cubed of distilled water to third test tube
    7. Leave overnight for osmosis
    8. Remove potato cylinders and roll on paper towel to remove any surface moisture
    9. Measure length and mass of cylinders again
  • % change = change in value / original value x 100
    • In water, potato cylinder gains mass as water moves into it by osmosis
    • In concentrated sugar solution, cylinder loses mass as water moves out by osmosis
