  • Discovered that germs cause disease in 1861
  • Germ theory is the idea that specific microorganisms cause specific diseases
  • Pasteur proved germ theory correct by sterilising water in a swan necked flask and found that the closed flask allowed no microbes in, keeping it sterile
  • The French government paid Pasteur to hire research assistants and set up a new lab
  • Pasteur came up with the vaccines for Cholera, Anthrax and Rabies
  • Pasteur was determined to match Koch's discoveries so built up a research team to make faster progress
  • Chicken cholera experiment
    1. Chamberland forgot to inoculate a batch of chickens with the germs causing the chicken cholera
    2. The laboratory shut over the summer
    3. When they returned, Chamberland inoculated the chickens with the old germs
    4. The chickens didn't die
    5. They then inoculated them with fresh germs, the chickens still didn't die
  • Pasteur's discovery
The old weaker germs protected the chickens from getting cholera
  • Pasteur continued to test this and produced a vaccine against anthrax
  • Koch was very angry as he thought Pasteur has stolen some of his work
