Long term significance

• Pasteur discovery encouraged councils and governments to build sewers, to keep the streets clean and provide clear water
• Surgery became safer as antiseptic surgery was introduced, later aseptic surgery, to remove germs from a surgical environment
• Treatments improved, e.g the first chemical drugs were created in the late 1800s, and the first antibiotic penicillin was found in the 1930s
