• Government finally took responsibility for public health. They asked for the Chadwick report to be researched and passed the 1848 public health act in response to the cholera outbreaks
• After the great stink of 1858 the government gave £3 million to joseph bazalgettes to build a sewer system and passed the 1875 public health act, among others
• Government funded laboratories and teams of scientists for Pasteur and Koch
