The question word nani

• The question word nani or nan means "what". The 2 versions are used differently. Nani can stand alone to simply mean "what?" Nan cannot be used alone. It is always used with other words such as desu, as in the sentence "Nan desu ka" ("What is it?")
• What is it?

  Nan desu ka
• How old are you?

  Nansai desu ka.
• What color is it?

  Nani iro desu ka.
• What do you like?

  Nani ga suki desu ka?
