Edward V 1483

Cards (19)

  • Edward V was King of England for 11 weeks

9th of April to the 25th of June 1483
  • Edward V was apparently dethroned by his uncle Richard III
  • Edward V was the 13th Plantagenet King on the list
  • It's maybe not correct to describe Edward V's tenure as a Reign because he never did nor was he ever crowned
  • Edward V

Son of King Edward IV, inherited the crown when he was just 12 years old, one of the Two Princes in the Tower along with his younger brother Richard
  • Edward V was born
    1470
  • Edward IV had been King for around 9 years when Edward V was born
  • Edward IV had been crowned after overthrowing the sitting King Henry VI in 1461
  • Powerful Nobles had overthrown Edward IV and placed Henry VI back on the throne at the time of Edward V's birth
  • Edward IV returned the following year, re-overthrew King Henry VI and declared himself King again
  • Edward IV reigned until his death in 1483
  • How Edward V became King
    1. Edward IV died
    2. Edward V, as the elder son and heir, immediately inherited the title becoming Edward V
    3. Edward V started his journey to London for his coronation along with the Earl, his older half brother Richard, and his Chamberlain Thomas Vaughn
  • What happened to Edward V
    1. Richard the Duke of Gloucester intercepted the royal party just outside of London
    2. Separated Edward V from Rivers, his half brother, and his Chamberlain
    3. Sent them North
    4. Brought Edward V South and placed him in the Tower of London for his own protection
    5. Had the three men he sent North executed
    6. Postponed Edward V's coronation
    7. Placed Edward V's younger brother the 10-year-old Richard the Duke of York in the Tower alongside him
  • Around 10 weeks into Edward V's Reign, a dodgy Theologian Ralph Shaw stood up in St Paul's Cathedral and delivered a sermon claiming that the recently deceased King Edward IV had already been married to someone else when he married Edward V's Mother Elizabeth Woodville, meaning that Edward V was illegitimate and no longer entitled to be king
  • Richard the Duke of Gloucester declared himself King and was duly crowned Richard III
  • After Richard III was crowned, Edward V and his brother were seen less and less, and by the end of the year it was widely accepted that they had disappeared, probably killed
  • Edward V may not be the only King in the timeline to have been murdered, but he is the only monarch whose fate remains a complete mystery and who consequently remains unburied
  • These events must have been quite a shock for the Queen Elizabeth Woodville
  • Elizabeth Woodville was spurred on to take revenge and threw her support behind the man who would overthrow the apparently deadly Richard III and claim the throne himself, Henry Tudor or Henry VII
